The Start

In the mid-1990s, Karen saw an opportunity to fill a growing need in the construction industry while maintaining the ability to care for a growing family. At that time there were very few cost estimating firms and the market could potentially benefit from a new consulting company in the area. Advertisements for estimators were in every publication. With the knowledge acquired while working for a General Contractor in New York, strong organization skills and a love for mathematics, PCM was launched by Karen with husband Jan as the lead estimator.
Family Affair

It did not take long; first-time clients became repeat customers, and word of mouth assisted in gaining more clients. In a year, there was enough work to keep the two person office working on a more than full time basis. As work levels increased, another estimator was brought on to provide help on a part-time basis. Eventually as Karen and Jan’s three children grew they began to learn some of the skills in estimating and began helping in the office. In 2006, a much needed, part time administrative assistant was hired to help with typical office duties and giving Karen more time for the estimating work.
Growing

In 2008, after their second child Jared, graduated from college with a degree in Finance, it was determined he would be a great fit in joining the business. Virtually growing up with the company and working thru college on a part-time basis, it made sense. Unfortunately this occurred at the exact time of the economic downturn, however, PCM managed to continue to get work, albeit, less than in prior years. With the market changes, marketing and gaining new opportunities became Karen’s primary focus. New clients were developed, and some old clients were lost due to the recession, but for the most part, PCM came out on the other side stronger and even more versed in skills.
Graduation

By 2012, with the graduation of their third child Shelby, another family member came on board and marketing continued to sustain the growing company. The economy continued to show signs of slow recovery and an uptick was seen in projects, as well as, developing relationships with new clients.
Expanding

In 2013, Karen and Jan’s oldest child Kyla, approached her parents about expanding PCM by opening and managing an office with work associate Lindsey, in New England. Both Kyla and Lindsey worked for a top 100 General Contractor/Construction Manager, they felt that expanding PCM with a New England location could better serve PCM’s New England clients. After months of researching the needs in the area as well as the requirements to open a new location, PCM’s New England office opened in late January 2014. All were excited about the expansion to New England and the speed at which it generated new clients.
Upgrade

The company went from a two-person operation to a ten staff, two office, company in a very short period of time with growth in both locations. PCM has been in business over twenty-five years and has a full portfolio of project experience but is also small enough to bring the individual attention and expertise of its top officers to each and every project.

Over the last ten years, PCM Company has seen incredible growth on a national scale with clients utilizing our construction consulting services. This progress has driven our next generation of company leaders to actively participate in the everyday company operations and therefore allows PCM to be more robust and available to take on projects no matter size or scope. Our leadership team is considered industry experts for construction cost estimating and scheduling. Clients will have direct contact with the executive team on every project to ensure they receive the best results, service, and products every time.
