PCM assisted the client (Bowdoin College) and the design team by producing a conceptual estimate for a new apartment-style dormitory. An evaluation was completed for three (3) building types to determine the best option for the client. The style/shape of the buildings varied from a bar, pinwheel and a hybrid version. The building options ranged from the number of buildings (3-4 buildings), how many stories for each building (3-4 stories), and the number of beds within the structures (36-64 beds). In total, the new facility would include 172–184 beds with common spaces on each level for dining and socializing. The project is designed to meet Passive House certification, using half the amount of energy as regular building by more efficient insulation and improved air exchange systems for heating and cooling.
